Virtual Worlds and the Decline of Social Capital

Robert Putnam missed a gold mine when he wrote his modern classic (2000) Bowling Alone, about the decline of American social capital. He's missed the irony of people "getting together" online with people half a world away while being supremely lonely in their own backyards.

We can't even begin to explore the depths of irony and spiritual poverty that compulsive online role playing has brought our society. We're lonely, so we isolate ourselves from our neighbours and reach out anonymously to strangers thousands of miles away for 60-80 hours a week. Does this strike anyone else as odd?

Very much looking forward to seeing your film.
