Like any other hobby, especially those in the weird world of geekdom, if the SO is not on-board, look out. Playing WoW, I've hung out with parents and their children more than once, and it's cool to see. One time running a low-level instance to get gear for his son, the dad - running his son's toon along with his, the son's toon being inert and just following dad's and all legal within game mechanics - the dad had to go afk for a bit. He handed his son's toon off to me to look after.
I took that as a great compliment.
